description | The interrelationship of faith and health is reflected in this qualitative study of the responses of churches in the Southeastern United States following the destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Actions taken by this sample of Christian but interdenominational congregations included instrumental functions of congregations and discussions of belief related to health. Discussions in the congregations centred on three areas: where God was; how a person “should” feel; and, how a person “should” act. Within these areas, topics known to be related to health such as hope, forgiveness, empowerment, personal and community transformation, were identified. Partnerships between public health organizations and communities of faith offer opportunity to extend the health‐related functions of both groups for the good of the community. A presentation (by two of the authors, Olson and Ball) based on this paper was given at the International Spirituality and Health Conference, Cumbria, in April 2003.
