Zusammenfassung:Information on the life cycle, phenology, host specificity, distribution and potential noxiousness of the European populations of B. divaricatae is presented based on field studies and cloning experiments. Morphological analysis of all morphs was performed and canonical discrimination function proposed enabling separation between B. divaricatae and B. klugkisti – lychnidis – lychnicola complex. Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial (COI) and nuclear (EF1) DNA sequences of four species of Brachycaudus support the idea of placing B. cardui in a separate subgenus from B. divaricatae and B. lychnidis .
