description Social security systems of the European Union Member States are very different and their diversity is due to their historical evolution and the context specific for each country. However, it is possible to speak about a “European social model” if we take into consideration the fact that these systems differ more from the American or Japanese systems than between themselves. The classification in regimes of “bismarckian” or “beveridgian” inspiration is too simple and does not emphasize their diversity. The national systems of social security in the European Union member states are arranged, in the classical option, in four classes – the continental system, the system of the Sorthern Europe, the anglo-saxon system and the mediteranean system, at which we have to add the system of the Southern and East- European countries which are members of EU from May 2004 and January 2007.
