Akademickie Koło Towarzystwa Szkoły Ludowej we Lwowie (1898–1914)

In the year 1889, at a mass meeting of the academic community at the Lviv University, a resolution expressing the need of establishing a social organization for the purpose of propagating education among ordinary people was adopted. In the year 1890, in Cracow, a committee of citizens for celebrating the 100th anniversary of passing the Constitution of 3 May in the year 1791, set up (upon the request of the delegation of students from Lviv) the Association of Folk School. Adam Asnyk, a well-known poet, politician and columnist, became the president of this organization. At the Lviv University, in the year 1898, a student circle of the AFS was established. In this organization, students, professors and graduates of the University were active in it. The circle conducted courses for the illiterate, libraries and reading rooms, and students delivered readings for rural population. In folk houses, music ensembles, theatres and choirs conducted their activity. Apart from cultural and educational activity, the Association roused patriotism amongst the Polish population in the Borderlands, organizing the celebrations of anniversaries connected with national tradition.
