description Current findings of the scientists draw attention to the deepening of environmental crisis, the most recent researches confirm that processes that have connection with disruption of climatic conditions on the planet Earth are accelerating. Mankind with its own activity significantly impairs the ability of the biosphere to maintain balance and regenerate natural systems. European Union accepts long term programmes of the environmental protection and natural resources management. Different tools for the application of the environmental politics have been created, in the contribution are characterized the indicators for the sustainable development: environmental space, ecological footstep and living planet index which clearly reflect the levels of development in specific realities of each country and the state of the Earth's biological diversity. These indicators show that mankind consumes about one-third more resources than is currently available, so the current way of life in the Euro-Atlantic culture is unsustainable.
