19世紀末,「完整兒童」觀念在美國興起,它是現代兒童觀念的來源之一。1880年,海爾曼借助福祿培爾「恩物」的創造原則對「完整兒童」進行了最初說明。受進化論思想和機能主義心理學的影響,霍爾、亨德森、詹森以「有機體」為切入點對這一觀念進行了分別闡釋。杜威以「經驗」連續性為依據、克伯屈以「活動」為實現路徑的說明則意味著「完整兒童」觀念的成熟。「完整兒童」觀念對當時眾多教育運動、學校教育實踐以及教育觀念均產生了不同程度的影響,對後續民眾與學者們關於兒童地位、學校角色等方面認識的更新也發揮著持續作用...
