Bei John Wesley liegt das Hauptgewicht seiner Theologie nicht auf Meinungen und Lehren, sondern auf Gesinnung und Lebensführung. Mitbegründer der methodistischen Kirchen waren Johns Bruder Charles Wesley und George Whitefield.

Die Kirchen methodistischer und wesleyanischer Tradition sind im Weltrat methodistischer Kirchen (WMC) organisiert, der zu den großen protestantischen Kirchenbünden zählt. Im deutschen Sprachraum vertretene Gliedkirchen des WMC sind die Evangelisch-methodistische Kirche, die Freie methodistische Kirche mit ihren Kirchenregionen, die Evangelische Gemeinschaft Deutschland und die Kirche des Nazareners.
